P. berghei ANKA Oocyst
Difference from wild-type
RMgm-233
Normal numbers of oocyst and oocyst-derived sporozoites are formed. In a significant fraction of mature oocysts the sporozoites did not egress from the oocysts resulting in reduced numbers of sporozoites in the hemocoel.

P. berghei ANKA Oocyst
Difference from wild-type
RMgm-234
Normal numbers of oocyst and oocyst-derived sporozoites are formed. In a significant fraction of mature oocysts the sporozoites did not egress from the oocysts resulting in reduced numbers of sporozoites in the hemocoel.
Imported from RMgmDB
P. berghei ANKA Oocyst
Difference from wild-type
RMgm-109
Oocyst production is normal. Sporozoites are formed within the oocysts. Sporozoites fail to egress from the oocysts (see phenotype 'Sporozoite').

P. berghei ANKA Sporozoite
Difference from wild-type
RMgm-233
Normal numbers of oocyst and oocyst-derived sporozoites are formed. In a significant fraction of mature oocysts the sporozoites did not egress from the oocysts resulting in reduced numbers of sporozoites in the hemocoel. No sporozoites were detected in the salivary glands. Sporozoites show infrequent, non-productive motility.

P. berghei ANKA Sporozoite
Difference from wild-type
RMgm-109
Sporozoites are formed within the oocysts. Sporozoites fail to egress from the oocysts: very few sporozoites were detected in the hemocoel and salivary glands of infected A. stephensi (mean of 375 sporozoites per salivary gland compared to over 10.000 in wild type).

P. berghei ANKA Liver
Difference from wild-type
RMgm-234
Mice/rats could not be infected by the bite of mosquitoes infected with the mutant.Only by intravenous injections of high numbers of sporozoites (50.000), blood stage infections developed in mice.

RMgm-233

P. berghei ANKA Liver
Difference from wild-type
RMgm-109
Sporozoites fail to egress from the oocysts. No blood stage infections developed when mice were infected by bite of infected mosquitoes. Sporozoites collected from oocysts by liberating them using mechanical rupture were infectious to C57Bl/6 mice after intravenous injection (12x10(6)) sporozoites comparable to wild type oocyst-derived sporozoites. Oocyst-extracted sporozoites showed in vitro hepatocyte HepG2) traversal and invasion that was not significantly lower than sporozoites from wild type oocyst derived-sporozoites.
