P. berghei ANKA Gametocyte
Difference from wild-type
RMgm-361
Normal production of gametocytes and gametes. A complete block of development of fertilized female gametes (zygotes) into mature ookinetes. Northern analysis of mRNA of gametocytes showed a nearly complete loss of transcripts (mRNA) of genes that are translationally repressed (for example genes encoding the ookinete surface proteins P25, P28). Microarray analysis of mRNA of gametocytes showed a significant reduction (> 2x) of transcripts of 370 genes; including seven of nine genes previously shown to be translationally repressed.

P. berghei ANKA Ookinete
Difference from wild-type
RMgm-361
Normal production of gametocytes and gametes (see also phenotype 'Gametocyte/gamete'). A complete block of development of fertilized female gametes (zygotes) into mature ookinetes. Normal development into ookinetes requires meiotic DNA replication in the zygote 2-3 hours after fertilization of female gametes. In the mutant, all zygotes aborted development before meiosis.

Imaging data (from Malaria Metabolic Pathways)

Localization of PfDZ50 by immunofluorescence staining. The cells were fixed and immunostained. Panel (I) phase, panel (II) image of cell stained with DAPI (for nucleus staining), panel (III) immunofluorescently stained cell (green, PfDZ50) and panel (IV) super-imposed images. Panels a to e are late ring, early trophozoite, late trophozoite, early schizont and late schizont stages of the asexual development of P. falciparum 3D7 strain stained with immune IgG. PfDZ50 is expressed in all the asexual stages. It is concentrated mainly in the cytoplasmic region and shows a granular localization pattern.Tarique M, Ahmad M, Ansari A, Tuteja R. Plasmodium falciparum DOZI, an RNA helicase interacts with eIF4E. Gene. 2013 522(1):46-59.
