Imaging data (from Malaria Metabolic Pathways)

Localisation of GFP-tagged PfHK using confocal microscopy. Brightfield, GFP-fluorescence and merged images of erythrocytes infected with two ring-stage parasites (top) and a trophozoite-stage parasite (bottom). Scale bar represents approximately 1.5 mm. GFP-associated fluorescence (green) was diffuse throughout the parasite cytosol, both in the ring and trophozoite stages.Tjhin ET, Staines HM, van Schalkwyk DA, Krishna S, Saliba KJ. Studies with the Plasmodium falciparum hexokinase reveal that PfHT limits the rate of glucose entry into glycolysis. FEBS Lett. 2013 587(19):3182-7

Cellular localisation of hexokinase. Sections of blood stage forms of the parasite were labelled with monospecific hexokinase serum followed by protein A gold labelling and silver enhancement. Slide I, ring stage; slide 2, trophozoite; slide 3, schizont; slide 4, schizont at higher magnification. Bars indicate 1 mm (slides 1 3) or 0.1 /mm (slide 4). Out of 947 gold particles counted, a statistically significant amount (65.7%) was found in association with parasite membrane structures.Olafsson P, Certa U. Expression and cellular localisation of hexokinase during the bloodstage development of Plasmodium falciparum. Mol Biochem Parasitol. 1994 63:171-4. Copyright Elsevier
